If you are required to keep your cart on the path, you can end up walking farther than you would have if you hoofed it. I once watched a golfer walk 75 yards from the path to examine his ball, which was lying in the rough 300 yards from the green; walk 75 yards back to his cart to get a club; walk 75 yards back to his ball; top the ball 50 yards forward; walk 75 yards back to get another club (his 250-yard club, I guess); drive his cart 50 yards forward, etc.

"But why can''t he just take three clubs, walk over to the ball, pick a club and hit the damn thing?"
