I started to turn away as I passed the SureFire booth where the salesman was demonstrating a self-igniting Mapp gas-brazing torch (nothing new there). Then I noticed him put the tip of his finger on the operating torch tip. I stopped to see if he had an artificial hand, or at least to see if I could render first aid. It turns out that he was demonstrating the company''s new Cool Burning tip. Yes, impressive!I''ve always been curious about ultrasonic leak detectors, especially when using them to locate refrigerant leaks. The Amprobe people had a new twist to demonstrate at the show. Their Model TMULD-300 has a parabolic reflector that mounts around the microphone tip. This, they say, accomplishes three objectives: It makes the pickup several times more sensitive; it takes the pickup more directional; and it reduces wind noise. * Improved vehicle aerodynamics have decreased wind resistance and made the vehicles more "slippery."* Down-sized engines have reduced engine braking by compression.* Higher speed rear axle ratios have reduced mechanical retardation.* Radial tires have reduced rolling resistance.* The movement toward smaller wheels and low profile tires require the smaller brake to absorb the same amount of energy as the standard 16-1/2 x 7-in, brake of today.It is no wonder that brake specifications have assumed such a predominate role when purchasing equipment. Fortunately, for truck fleets and the motoring public alike, government is playing a major role in demanding certain brake performance standards on new vehicles.How do all of these government standards help the truck fleet manager when specifying air brake systems? Actually, the standards assume the major responsibilities for proper braking of new vehicles. However, the fleet manager still has certain obligations: There are two ways to clear the hole. We show stopping the auger and lifting it and the soil out of the hole and emptying the soil in one pile near the hole. That keeps the soil in one place for easy backfilling and prevents it from scattering over nearby grass. An alternative is to dig down a few inches, then throttle back to slow the turning and pull it free to spin off the collected dirt. Then drop it back down to pull up more soil. This method is faster (and more physically demanding), but dirt will fly everywhere and be harder to reclaim. It''s a good method if you''re backfilling with gravel or concrete and/or don''t care about the mess.
