Mayfield (N.Y.) Fire District #2 has found several other uses for its GPS system. "We''re using GPS technology everywhere we can," says Chief Myron Messak. "We''ve implemented predetermined trauma helicopter landing zones, not only in my fire district but for all fire districts in county."Messak''s agency also has developed GPS maps of all village buildings and hydrants, mapped the location of rural water sources and dry hydrants. "We even have a hotlink of buildings on the map to an AutoCAD floor plan to help in the event of a fire," he says. However, there were events that happened for which we were ill prepared, and we would come away with a much better appreciation for the difficulties involved in controlling long-duration life-support systems.
