I enlisted the services of my 10-year-old grandson, Dean, to help me in the preparation of the material for these articles. Figures 1-5 show Dean astride a progression of vehicles designed first for very young children up to vehicles, which require a great deal of skill to operate, for older children and young adults. Each of these vehicles provides unique opportunities to begin teaching children safe, competent, driving skills that are age-appropriate to the learner.When Dean was about 3 years old, he received his first battery-powered riding toy: a Power Wheels vehicle shown in Figure 1. By the time Dean was 5 years old, he had pretty well outgrown it. Although it only lasted him a short time, the Power Wheels is an excellent tool for pre-schoolers to begin learning initial driving skills. [FIGURE 1-2 OMITTED]When the magnetic bearings are energized, the motor and impellers, which are keyed directly to the magnetic shaft, levitate. Permanent-magnetic bearings do the primary work, while digitally controlled electromagnets provide the fine positioning. Four positioning signals per bearing hold the levitated assembly to a tolerance of 0.00002 in. As the levitated assembly moves from the center point, the electromagnets'' intensity is adjusted to correct the position. These adjustments occur 6 million times a minute. The software has been designed to automatically compensate for any out-of-balance condition in the levitated assembly.SHUTDOWNS AND POWER FAILURESWhen the compressor is not running, the shaft assembly rests on graphite-lined, radially located touchdown bearings. The magnetic bearings normally position the rotor in the proper location, preventing contact between the rotor and other metallic surfaces. If the magnetic bearings fail, the touchdown bearings (also known as backup bearings) are used to prevent a compressor failure. Though light in weight, Airbor magnetic drill has a powerful 1.6-hp air motor and 1,600-lb magnetic holding strength. With its extra rack, stroke length is extended to 10 1/4 in. Annular cutter capacity is up to 2 1/16 in. diam. Geared chuck adapter converts the unit to a standard drill press. The Slugger Air Force pneumatic drill, at 24 lbs, 6 1/4" high, is useful for confined area drilling. The drill''s features include a permanent magnet that turns on or off by air power, a cutter capacity of up to 1 1/16" diameter x 3/4" depth and the ability to use ShortSlugger cutters and frame cutters. These cutters'' geometry allows the operator to drill multi-layered truck frames in a single pass.
