Both have been used in IAQ remediation systems for years, and several companies displayed such wares. However, I was struck by the way these concepts were put together in a well-thought-out package from Sol Aire. Its Whole House Air Purification System combines a germicidal lamp and an ozone generator in a single device. You simply cut a hole in the plenum and insert the active elements. Integral mounting magnets hold it in place. Plug it into a standard 120V outlet. The system turns itself on and off automatically by sensing air flow. Many new IAQ test tools were on display, but the one with which I was the most impressed was TPI''s Model 705 carbon monoxide analyzer. It reads CO levels out directly in ppm. It''s fast and easy to use. But consider that when contract crews clean rarely are they supervised by someone who owns the equipment of uses it the next day. Think also of the cleaners'' perspective and experience with equipment. They can powerwash their $150 gas lawn mower and it starts right up afterwards, so how come they can''t hose off the front of a $30,000 combi-oven or the burners of a $5,000 range or griddle?A look at this year''s National Restaurant Association Restaurant, Hotel-Motel Show directory reveals that there were more than a dozen manufacturers exhibiting all sizes and types of pressure-washing or steam-cleaning equipment. One has to wonder what foodservice equipment manufacturers think all those units are going to be used for--washing parking lots? It''s time for a reality check!
