Filter maintenance problems can occur during winter months when the temperature of the fuel drops below the cloud point and wax starts to be filtered out. This accumulated wax will eventually dissolve when the fuel heats up and may cause some operation problems such as rough running and black smoke. Winter conditions may require switching to #1 diesel fuel if available. Fuel-Injection Pumps -- There are two basic types of fuel injection pumps: in-line and distributor. (In February, I will explain how a distributor pump operates and discuss some troubleshooting hints). Both in-line and distributor pumps may include a separate, built-in transfer pump. * Transfer Pumps -- The majority of transfer pumps are of the diaphragm type that provide a maximum of 8 psi to the main pump. The diaphragm pump is simple in nature and usually trouble-free. However, the check valves may become sticky if the diesel fuel gets too old. Fungus and bacteria can gum up the valves and reduce both flow and pressure. Also, diaphragms can rupture, and fuel can leak into the engine oil. This can be detected during daily service checks. On an engine that consumes oil, oil consumption would appear to stop and the oil level might even rise on the dipstick. The drill''s features include a permanent magnet that turns on or off by air power, a cutter capacity of up to 1 1/16" diameter x 3/4" depth and the ability to use ShortSlugger cutters and frame cutters. These cutters'' geometry allows the operator to drill multi-layered truck frames in a single pass.
