* If the smoke generator suddenly shuts down or great clouds of smoke come out the engine head opening, make the flutter valve your first check. Usually the valve has slipped or the nut holding the valve in place is loose. Reposition the valve and tighten the nut and see if that helps. A good PMCS check is to eyeball the grooves in the head that help hold the valve in place. If they''re worn, you probably need a new head. The valve will not stay in place.* A bad band heater will shut down the control panel when you turn on the panel. Then you can''t; smoke. If you suspect that''s the problem, unplug the band heater. That lets you turn on the control panel and smoke. The generator should still start, although it may have more trouble doing so. Then get the band heater fixed as soon as possible. The Chicago Pneumatic Air Scribe is a bit noisy and also produces quite a bit of dust and grit as it disintegrates the rock matrix, making both a dust mask and ear protectors necessary when the unit is in use outside a dust-collecting chamber. A silencer that fits snugly around the hand-held unit is not available from the manufacturers but can easily be made with a few common household tools. By cutting a piece of metal tubing to the length of the air scribe''s handpiece and notching one end so that it can be crimped to conform to the tapered bit end of the tool, a very simple noise insulator is produced. A foam rubber plug inserted in the bit end forms a snug fit. The only disadvantage to this noise protection is that the natural stream of air emitted from the tool end is blocked, and dust is not readily blown off the working surface. Likely some innovative tinkerer will soon solve this problem. Simple ear plugs or muffs are adequate to help provide hearing protection. Another minor problem with the air scribes is the absolute necessity of lubrication. Producing an effective reciprocal motion to any tool involves very complex valves and close-fitting parts. This is especially true when the tool is designed to be very small. Depending on the duration of use, an air scribe must be oiled from once to several times per day. This involves shutting down the system, dismantling the air supply, and inserting several drops of high-quality air-tool oil. In-line oiling systems are available that can make this process far simpler. Additionally, regularly flushing the unit with oil will eliminate microscopic particles of metal and grit and will greatly extend the life of your air scribe. Sandblasting Fused fluxes are melted in a furnace, chilled, then crushed and screened for size. These pickup little moisture and recycle without alterations in particle size or composition. Bonded fluxes are powdered materials mixed dry and bonded together with a silicate, pelletized, baked, broken up, and screened for size: the process permits easy addition of deoxidizers and alloying elements. Bonded fluxes allow thicker flux layers when welding and can be identified quickly by color. Disadvantages of bonded fluxes are their absorption of moisture and alterations during handling in panicle size and composition due to particle segregation. Agglomerated fluxes are similar to bonded fluxes except that they use a ceramic binder. They require higher baking temperatures during manufacture, which limits additions of deoxidizers and alloying elements. Mechanically mixed fluxes are combinations of two or more bonded or agglomerated fluxes. They allow special flux mixtures for critical welds, but they may separate during storage, use, and flux recovery.
